Carlu gala celebrates best of old and new

Toronto Star

When they first set eyes on it back in 1976, the seventh floor of the old College Park Eaton store was a dark, dirty, desolate and dingy place. But Eleanor Koldofsky and her tiny army of three didn't despair. Instead, they dug in their heels to save it from the wreckers' ball and fought all the way to the Supreme Court to do it. So it was fitting that Koldofsky and the other members of Save the 7th Floor Inc. were honoured last night with a special tribute marking the 30th annual Heritage Toronto Awards. "It's nice to be recognized for the work we've done," said a smiling Koldofsky, adding she and her committee — Brian Forsythe, James Reid and Patsy Zolf — fought for 27years to make the dream a reality. The hardest part, she said, was convincing councils of the past to save what they knew was a treasure. Today the auditorium and round room, located at Yonge and College Sts., are considered the finest examples of Art Deco and Art Modern in North America.
