Last week was a good one for people who care about the fate of Toronto's elderly, dignified architectural retirees. In a smooth ending to a bumpy story, the University of Toronto's historic botanical greenhouse -- long a gleaming landmark at the junction of University Avenue and College Street -- reopened across town as the Allan Gardens Children's Conservatory. Many thought the 70-year-old structure was doomed when the U of T decided to put up the new Leslie Dan pharmaceutical building on the greenhouse site. The fine glass house was saved by the quick action of heritage activists and, more particularly, Councillor Kyle Rae , who got backing from the city for moving it, and $1.5-million in fix-up money from the TD Bank Financial Group.
