On October 26th, Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects is holding a Media Book Launch at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design (AL&D) to celebrate the publication of a new monograph by Birkhauser, a leading European publisher of books on architecture. This is the first international monograph on a Canadian practice.
KPMB's forthcoming contribution to the city of Toronto includes projects such as the Yoing Center for the Performing Arts (scheduled for completion in 2005) and the new Telus Centre for Performance and Learning for the Royal Conservatory of Music (scheduled for 2006).
KPMB was founded in 1987 by Bruce Kuwabar, Thomas Payne, Marianne McKenna and Shirly Blumberg. The four partners were previously former associates of Toronto architect Barton Myers. Now one of Canada's foremost firms, it has received more than 60 national and international awards for their work across North America. Outside of Canada, they have worked in Chicago and Rhode Island, as well as Zurich and Berlin. Current projects include a new corporate headquarters for Manitoba Hydro in Winnipeg, and a new vertical academic campus for Concordia University in Montreal.
The new monograph documents KPMB's past and future influence on Toronto with 24 realised projects and seven works in progress. In addition, there is a collection of essays contributed by noted academics including Phyllis Lambert, Detlef Mertins and Rodolphe el-Khoury who examine the question of Toronto Style. The designer Bruce Mau has interviewed the four partners on practice and ambition
