Toronto's talking tall

The Globe and Mail

Despite opposition by city bureaucrats, who dislike the whole idea, and despite the occasional rumble between real estate developers and the still-potent followers of Jane Jacobs, Toronto is becoming a city of tall residential buildings. This event is something Torontonians should feel good about. The skyscraper is a handy tool for slowing suburban sprawl, and for intensifying and enriching the life and visual dash of the city. New, dramatic streetscapes and skylines and sightlines are emerging as condominium towers climb to the sky. If designed with imagination, flair and civic conscience, skyscrapers can be magnificently beautiful objects in their own right, bringing glory to the city that welcomes them. That is, of course, a big if.
