Georgia Houston is giving her university a facelift. Traditionally, universities hire professional architects to spruce up their gloomy, dated buildings. But in a new twist, the University of Calgary has turned to its own students, including Ms. Houston. Dubbed by the university as "the ultimate class project," eight architecture and industrial design students were given $3-million and a free hand to remodel 40 student spaces around campus -- a way to practise what they learn in the classroom. "We're definitely taught the problem-solving, conceptual side of things in the classroom with the understanding that once you get into the work force you'll have plenty of time to learn how things are done," said Ms. Houston, who is doing her master's degree in industrial design.
