It was like genies from a bottle. When Cliff Atkins opened the rag-stuffed end of a cardboard tube found in the rubble of a demolished basement wall, out came King Clancy, Charlie Conacher, Ace Bailey and Red Horner. It was a long-lost negative of the 1930-31 Toronto Maple Leafs posing in front of the Mutual Street arena, and Mr. Atkins not only welcomed these ghosts into his Beaches home 25 years ago, he had them authenticated by an expert at the Hockey Hall of Fame, who said the panoramic photo was the only one of its kind in existence. Ray Rogers and Laura McLauchlan weren't so lucky with their ghosts. A dusty old box under the dining room floor of their Annex home contained a lot more than the sterling silver spoons, bracelet and soccer medal wrapped in 1942 newspaper. After Ms. McLauchlan took to wearing the bracelet and the spoons had been given away at a dinner party, they awoke to "footsteps pounding downstairs."
